Hertfordshire County Council put forward all 286 Community Transport drivers and escorts for an NVQ Level 2

John Sykes, Integrated Transport Manager for HCC
A commitment to life-long learning

The Challenge: HCC Community Transport is responsible for providing services to some of the most vulnerable members of the community such as elderly people being transported to and from day care centres. A high standard of customer service is a priority as well as the ability to deal sensitively with the needs of people with a wide range of disabilities. Hertfordshire County Council has a policy of life-long learning for all its employees so the opportunity to provide relevant training for their CT drivers and escorts was regarded as an excellent opportunity by HCC’s Integrated Transport Manager, John Sykes.

However, the fact that the training could be delivered at no cost to the Council was of secondary importance. John Sykes needed to be assured that the training would be relevant to the particular needs of his drivers and escorts and the communities they serve. Incidentally, HCC now strongly recommends all its contracted providers to put their drivers forward for training.

‘My objective is to provide quality Transport Services for all my Residents in Hertfordshire. This involves setting and managing quality standards for both my employed drivers and escorts in our Transport Services Department and in working with my contracted Operators of Integrated Services to encourage them to adopt and manage the same quality standards for their staff.

The Solution: M2 Training agreed to ‘craft’ and NVQ to directly reflect the particular demands of Community Transport. This included a focus on:

  • Customer Care
  • Dealing with Difficult Clients
  • Helping passengers with Special Needs
  • SEN Awareness
  • DDA Compliance
  • Health & Safety

Once agreed the curriculum was agreed with John Sykes and M2 Training sourced full funding from the Learning Skills Council under the ‘Train to Gain’ programme.

The result: We leave the last word to John Sykes:

“The NVQ is the Industry recognised standard. I am delighted that M2 Training has been able to source full funding from the LSC and is able to deliver it to my Community Transport staff with minimum disruption to our Operations”.
